Each term our students have the opportunity to attend a visiting performance. Term One's performance will be the “Little Blue Dot” by the Queensland Arts Council. This performance centres around respect for our planet, each other and ourselves. The performance illustrates what respect, individuality and self-awareness mean to different people. The date of this performance will be Wednesday 11 February. The Art Council performance for Term Two was “The Riddle of the Dragon’s Hat” was held at school on Monday and Tuesday 25 and 26 May. Students in Years 6 and 7 participated in the One Punch Can Kill program ran by Queensland Police. This presentation was held on 22 October in the school library at 12:00pm. The program ran for 40 minutes and involved a CD presentation and a talk by the Police Officer and Parent. It finished with an open question time for the students.
Our Year 7 Peer Mediators and School Leaders will attend the “Tomorrow’s Leaders Today” leadership session run by Education Queensland in Townsville next Tuesday 3 March. Facilities! Facilities! As Bill Lawry says, “it’s all happening here”. East Ayr is getting ready for some major improvements. These are due to a variety of projects released by the Federal and State Governments as part of their employment stimulus projects. East Ayr is in round 1 of the Building The Education Revolution Program that will see two new buildings constructed. We will be getting a new Library / Science and Technology Centre and a new fully enclosed School Hall. Meetings with the project manager, builders and architect were held yesterday. Sites have been selected and building is expected to start in MAY and will take 5 – 6 months to complete. The new hall will be constructed near the play equipment on James Street. The Library / Science and Technology Centre will be situated in Ross Street near Block D. The project costs are $3 000 000. The second project is the National School’s Pride Project. East Ayr has nominated 3 jobs under this project. These include
These jobs are awaiting approval from the Federal Government. These projects will cost $200 000
The third Project
will see a new roof for Block A. This job will begin straight after the
Easter holidays. This project is part of the State Government’s
Schools Maintenance Program. This job will The fourth project is part of the State Schools of Tomorrow Grant which we applied for late last year. This project will see the veranda of all classrooms in Block A enclosed and new wet areas, port racks and outside learning areas established. This project will be the last to be started and may even flow over into the 2010 school year. The cost for this project is $1 077 000. Like we said there will be plenty happening around East Ayr. Our aim is to schedule the work so that there is a minimum amount of disruption to our normal class routine. We will keep you up to date as things become clearer. back ANZAC Day is only 4 and a bit weeks away !!! “So…..?”, I hear you ask. OK, here comes the story: I enjoy working with your kids, which is why I am happy the Government is willing to pay me to be the Chaplain at East Ayr SS. The Government pays only part of the costs of Chaplaincy, meaning the call is on our local community to make up the difference. Our Burdekin churches have a heart for Chaplaincy, so on ANZAC Day afternoon they are again running the annual “COUNTRY FUN DAY” The theme this year is “Arts & Karts”. Your children are invited to enter into the art competition, with a creation on the subject “Australiana”. This is for all of Prep to Year 7. Those in Years 5 to 7 are invited to take part in building and racing a Billy cart. Last year East Ayr won the Billy Cart race against the other schools, so we have a reputation to defend! Please see the accompanying ad and mark it on your calendar so your family can come for your kids, and make this a great afternoon on this special day. Warmest regards, Chappie John We had a great time at the COUNTRY FUN DAY on ANZAC Day afternoon. Exciting stuff happened such as sack races, tug o war, “Give Your Chappie A Hand” banner, 3 legged races, wall graffiti, a puppet play, painting activities, and the Billy Cart races…..all supported by yummy sausage burgers, Billy tea & damper, cakes and soft drinks. You could even take spag and yummy dessert home for tea = no cooking – yahoo!! A colouring-in competition was also held, on an appropriate Australian theme for an ANZAC Day activity – kangaroos!! You will be pleased to know East Ayr State School was the school with the highest number of entries, which happily means we won a number of prizes. Following is a list of our talented winners: Yr 2B – Takia-May Solomon Yr 3A – Jillian Slaney – Kirra Hodder – Kai Northwood – Darcy Heron Congratulations to our winners! No, we are not the Billy Cart champion school this year, the Christian College is – congratulations to them. The Year 5 students, who devoted quite a few big and little lunches to the creation of our cart, need to be congratulated for their application to the task. They are: Faith, Alexander, Shawn, Mikayla, Maigen, Maddisen, Matthew, Thomas, Kieran, George, Renee and Lauren. These students attended all our construction sessions, plus we had a few more assistants at different times. It is good to have a project which excites kids, which teaches new skills, which calls for teamwork, which requires obedience (for the sake of tool use safety), which needs a series of planned steps for success, and which on the last day can be a whole heap of FUN !! Biggest thanks goes to Mr Timms who got all the materials, allowed us to use his shed, and indeed did the giant portion of the construction task. Now we look to 2010 when we shall again try our best to be the Burdekin Billy Cart champions! The P & C ran a Disco on Thursday 3 April for students in Prep, Years 1, 2 and 3. This Disco was held at school starting at 6:00pm and finishing at 8:00pm under the shade area between blocks B & C in front of the stage. Sausage sizzles, drinks, lic sticks, chips were enjoyed by all. Parents were invited to stay and have coffee/tea and sweets. The 4-7 Disco for students in years 4, 5, 6 and 7 was held onThursday night, 15 October, starting at 6:30pm and finishing at 8:30pm. This will be held under the shade area between blocks B and C in front of the stage. Sausage sizzles, drinks, lic sticks, chips were enjoyed by all. Parents were invited to stay and have coffee/tea and sweets. No younger brothers or sisters are invited as they had their disco earlier this year. Our Year 6 and 7 students will have their first chance to experience High School life when they visit Ayr High to attend a “Smart Start Program” on Wednesday 29 April. Our students will participate in Technology and Computer classes run by Ayr High Teachers. Year 6 students will be attending from 9:00am to 11:30am. The Year 7 students will be at the High School from 11:30am and will return at 2:25pm. Congratulations to our two Ten Pin Bowling teams. Team 1 finished first in North Queensland and second in Queensland. Team 2 finished second in North Queensland. This competition was held between schools in North Queensland, Central Queensland and South East Queensland. Congratulations to the students: Team 1: Katherine Porter, Jarrod Langford, Rhys Koch, Hayden Olsen, William Webber. Team 2: Robert Pearce, Cameron Casella, Jordan Holmes, Aaron Hatfield, Chris Musumeci, Danae Olsen. Congratulations to Laura Sloan on a job well done as our Water Festival Ambassador. Laura represented East Ayr State School admirably at all the Water Festival functions and spoke well at the Junior Ambassador Presentation last Thursday night. Thank you to Laura’s support team that was lead by her Mum and Dad. They did a terrific job organising the float and helping with the coordination of various fundraising activities. Three other students from East Ayr were ambassadors for their clubs. Congratulations to Maddison Oats, Meg Andrews and Jo Morgan on their selection and efforts representing their club at this year’s functions. Congratulations to former East Ayr student, Heather Scott, on her success as runner up in this Year’s Water Festival Ambassador competition. Heather was one of our school leaders in 2002. The Pet Show held on Tuesday 2 September was well supported with 120 pets registering for this year’s show. It was a good night that also proved a good fundraiser for the school. Thank you to the ladies in the Tuckshop, Mrs Halliday for her organisation, Mrs Scott for the MC duties and everyone else who helped with a wide variety of jobs. The local sponsors, especially A & B Rural and No Worries Pet Care are to be thanked for their support.
Everyone had a good time at the Family Dance Night on Friday night 4 September. We had 520 students and probably just as many parents / grandparents / past pupils turn up on the night. We had more room than previous years but the dance area was still full when we had the combined dance sessions. Hopefully you got up for a dance during the night. The students certainly enjoyed themselves and are to be commended on their behaviour. There are quite a few people to thank. Thank you to
This was a top effort by all concerned. Thank you. Photos taken by the photographer will be available at the Office next week. We will let you know when they arrive.
